Sustainable packaging innovations for pure sugar syrups: introducing the smart ‘Bag in Box’
As part of Ragus’ ongoing commitment to sustainability, improving operational efficiency and innovating for our customers, we are phasing out traditional, rigid intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) in favour of advanced 4G-tracked or smart ‘Bag in Box’ pallecons. Unlike rigid IBCs, the Bag in Box pallecons are multi-trip, collapsable, and support sustainable circular packaging practices.
The smart Bag in Box packaging solution marks a significant step forward in our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) journey and helps us address the key challenges of waste reduction, circular economy practices and logistics efficiency. The smart Bag in Box solution supports our aim to reduce resource consumption while offering customers more environmentally friendly packaging options.
Sustainability at the core
The smart Bag in Box pallecons deliver a 70% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional IBCs due to their efficient design and lifecycle. A traditional IBC typically consumes 50kg of steel and 15kg of plastic per trip. By contrast, the Bag in Box uses just a few kilograms of recyclable plastic and can be reused over 70 times. At the end of its life, it is fully recyclable, minimising environmental impact.
By significantly reducing the demand for raw materials, the smart Bag in Box supports Ragus’ circular economy goals and helps our customers meet their own ESG commitments. Additionally, the new containers are exempt from extended producer responsibility (EPR) reporting, avoiding the additional costs associated with packaging recovery notes (PRNs).
Space-saving innovation
One of the standout features of the smart Bag in Box is its collapsible design. When empty, seven units occupy the same area as a single rigid IBC, offering space-saving benefits for factory floors, storage rooms and transportation.
The compact folded height of just 375mm ensures more efficient logistics, reducing the number of shipments and transport journeys required, and contributing to a reduction in the carbon footprint. These containers are also compatible with standard European pallet systems, making the transition seamless for our customers.
Advanced tracking for simplified operations
The 4G-tracking functionality and advanced telematics elevates the smart Bag in Box system to a new level of operational efficiency. Each unit can be tracked globally, providing real-time information about its location and whether it is filled or empty.
For customers, this means reduced administrative burdens. Automated systems can trigger collections when units are ready, and Ragus’ customer support team can proactively manage stock levels. This streamlined approach not only saves time but also ensures customers benefit from a smoother and more efficient supply chain.
Supporting Ragus customers
Switching to the smart Bag in a Box is designed to be as seamless as possible. The units feature DN50 outlets (DN80 also available), the same as traditional rigid IBCs, so no additional handling equipment is needed. Their 1200x1000mm footprint integrates effortlessly with existing handling systems.
By adopting this solution, our customers can save on space, reduce waste and strengthen their own sustainability credentials.
